A retrospective view of the soil is shown, a number of stages of soil science development and the emergence of generalized information on the subject under consideration have been identified since the work of V.V. Dokuchaev. Presented and analyzed are articles placed in encyclopedias and encyclopaedic dictionaries published in the past 120-year period. They are commented on, reflecting the development and formation of scientific ideas, concepts, concepts and studies of this unique body of nature. The concept of soil is inextricably linked with the concept of soil fertility. Soil is a natural resource, the soil shell of the Earth (the pedosphere) is allocated.
