Windthrow influence on the spatial-temporal variability of soil CO2 fluxes in the wood-sorrel spruce forests of the Central Forest Reserve

Monitoring results revealed a significant influence of windthrow on the spatial and temporal variability of soil CO2 fluxes in the representative for the southern taiga zone of the Central region of Russia centenary wood-sorrel spruce forests at the Central Forest Reserve with Sod-Podzoluvisols. Windthrow soil complexes and their structural components (pits and mounds) are a major factor of the within-biogeocenosis variability of soil CO2 fluxes in the background for European plain Center the wood-sorrel spruce forests of the Central Forest Reserve. For the investigated representative spruce forests there have been shown the dominant influence of the limiting ecological factor of the topsoil horizon temperature on the seasonal dynamics of soil CO2 fluxes with secondary limiting factor of soil moisture during the periods or in the soils with contrasting moisture conditions. An important factor in the detailed temporal dynamics of soil CO2 fluxes is the daily periodicity of micro-climatic conditions, that requires additional research and should be considered when adjusting the traditional daily monitoring measurements of the seasonal dynamics of CO2, with application of the correction factors calculated according the results of the daily dynamics analysis. Especially localized in time (day-time periods of summer 2017) and space (centenary the wood-sorrel spruce forests of the Central Forest Reserve) regression models of the daily soil CO2 fluxes dependence from the changes in soil temperature, soil moisture and atmosphere temperature allows to predict 75% of the soil CO2 fluxes variation (R2 =0.75), but they need further verification and expansion of its original localization.
