Current problems of breeding and seed production in the Russian Federation at the present stage

Breeding and seed production in Russia today is in a depressing state against the background of a rapidly growing market for foreign-selected seeds. The article discusses the main problems and causes of their occurrence in domestic breeding and seed production, identifies the existing objective constraints to the high potential of scientific institutions of breeding orientation. The main directions that require incentives to overcome the inertial trends in the development of breeding and seed production are outlined, and the tasks that need to be addressed first of all in order to reduce dependence on imports of seed products and achieve stable indicators of food security in the country are outlined
